Final Update on Kuiken Line

Why a final update? There are really NO other sources for more generations! This line of my family tree is should be seen in three distinct sections:

1: the first section, meticulously researched with birth, baptism, marriage, and death documentation

2: the second section, with people of historical note from whom we've discovered some documentation but mostly historical accounts (such as Alfred the Great--how could you possibly get a birth certificate for that guy?) Some of these people, in addition to having written histories, are mentioned in the latter Rhyme Chronicles of Holland and the later Anglo-Saxon Chronicles.

3: The final, earliest section are people who's genealogies are mentioned in the Rhyme Chronicles of Holland, the Anglo-Saxon Chronicles, Historia Britonum, Chronicon lethrense and the Annals of Lund, the Gesta Danorum by Saxo Grammaticus, Sögubrot, Njal's saga, and Hyndluljóð (an epic poem). For these generations, there is simply NO way to verify the information; many of these accounts were written accounts of oral traditions that were passed down for hundreds of years; therefore they are in my family tree for entertainment purposes only--as in, "hey, look where my family tree may lead!"

The earliest ancestor in my tree, using this last section, is my 57th great-grandfather Hadding, great-great grandfather to the real-life Danish king Hamlet (Amleth). Hamlet, then, is my is my 53rd great-uncle according to these ancient texts!

Born in an era of patronymic naming when a father's last name became his child's surname, Jacob bears both his patronym (Hendrikse is the patronymic form of his father's name hendrick) and an actual surname. It is my understanding that during this era a surname was not passed down from father to child unless that family was well-known or financially well-off, or was otherwise of some reknown locally. It is not known at this time why the surname Otte was used, but our earliest Otte ancestor was Heijndrick Otte van Willegen, a landowner at Borrselle.

I am descended from Jacob and his second wife, Lisbeth Jans. Jacob is my 6th great-grandfather.

His parents were a poor farming couple during an era of patronymic naming in the Netherlands; at birth therefore Tjerk was known simply as Tjerk Hiddes, using the first name of his father as a surname. Later in life he would adopt the name De Vries, meaning "The Fries," naming himself after the region in which he was born.

He married Nannenke Ates. His only son, Tjerk Hiddes the younger, was born shortly after his death. The couple lived in Harlingen.

Tjerk began a career in the Friesland Navy and by 1654 was a Captain. In 1658 he was in the service of Admiral Jacob van Wassenaer Obdam as a captain of a troop barge the Judith. He distinguished himself by taking three hostile ships and was soon appointed his own war ship. In the second English-Dutch war, he was appointed on 27 March 1665 as ordinary captain. On 29 June 1665 he was appointed as Luitenant-Admiraal of Friesland.

During the Anglo-Dutch wars at the St. James Day Battle, Tjerk was at the command of the Groot Frisia. Lieutenant-Admiral Tjerk Hiddes de Vries had an arm and a leg shot off during this battle, yet still tried to bring cohesion to his force even as he was moved from his ship to the home of his equipmentmaster Abraham Bishop in Vlissingen, where he died. During this battle, his brother Barent also commanded the ship Elf Steden.

Tjerk is one of the most beloved men in the history of Friesland. A naval ship been named after him and a postal stamp has been issued in his honor. A portrait of him by Gerbrand van den Eeckhout [artist] and
Jacobus Houbraken [engraver] hangs in the Fine Arts Museum in San Fransisco, USA. More information on Tjerk can be found on the Dutch version of Wikipedia.

Tjerk is the brother of my direct ancestor, Tjerkje Hiddesdr De Vries

Did you know?

Koudekerk is a former municipality, now part of Rijnwoude in Zuid-Holland, southeast of Leiden. Traces of early settlements have been found dating from the beginning of our era, including souvenirs of Romans. From 1326 till 1705 the Van Poelgeest family owned the place and had a redoubtable castle there - Groot Poelgeest.

My direct ancestors are Emerentia van Poelgeest and her father, Gerryt. "Poelgeest" is directly translated as "Pond Ghost," or pond spirit; "Van Poelgeest" could then be loosely translated as "of the pond spirit." An interesting thing to note is that ancient Frisians were Pagan, and as such gave spiritual import to things found in nature--like forests, fields and ponds.

Family trees written by our ancestors

In my research, I've discovered that three of our ancestors had written family trees; the earliest being written in the 16th century as a way to show lineage in a legal dispute. The tree written just prior to the one begun by Edward Otte and myself was written by Jacob Pieters Beukema. This tree was typed up and converted into a Window Help file by William Nijboer. Recently, Linda Cannon was able to find invaluable assistance in translating the letter Jacob Pieters had written into English. Below is that translation; after each section in Frisian, you will see the English translation. Enjoy, and thanks very much to Linda for her hard work!
Niet lang na zijnen dood, is hij bijkans vergeten ;

One generation goes and the other comes
And disappears shortly thereafter
Because shortly after people are born
The hour of death comes hastily nearer
Not long after he’s passed away he is forgotten
Even his own offspring don’t know anything about him
But if you write down the name, occupation, marital status and age
A memory will remain

____________

VOORBERICHT

_______

Especially in the northern part of Marne (town), in the province of Groningen, many people have the name Beukema. Most all of them are offspring of Jan and some of his brother Rijke Beukema, who both lived in the mid 1700’s in Vierhuizen (Town) and Niekerk (town). I have not found too many references to the brothers other than the church registry and some other files under the names of:

als: Boicum, Boijkema en later Beukema, hetwelk alleen aan de schrijfwijze der predikanten en van de personen zelven moet worden toegeschreven. De eigenhande naamtekening van Jan Boijkema komt meermalen voor in het Diakenie-boek der Hervormde gemeente van Vierhuizen.

Boicum, Boijkema and later Beukema. These variations where dependant upon the pastor’s form of writing them down (farmers were mostly illiterate). However the self written signature of Jan Boijkema is found several times in the Diakenie-boek of the Reformed church in Vierhuizen.

The reason, why this table does not have all its branches is because I could not trace everyone in my research. Therefore it might be possible to find people with the name Beukema that are not listed here. It has been impossible to trace everyone. So I have ventured in this fruitless attempt to put together a genealogy of the family Beukema, residing in Westerkwarties, from whom I have received the following: Sikke Duurts Beukema, born around 1696-1700, married to Remke Leus, a peasant in Enumatil (town) and Hoogemeeden Town (town). From this marriage are born:

Duurt, geboren 1728 à 1730, gehuwd met Brechtje Jans Harkema, in leven landbouwer, gewoond en overleden te Oostwold, benevens een zoon, genaamd Leu, en eene dochter genaamd Eltje.

Duurt (Name), born 1728-1730, married to Brechtje Jans Harkema, occupation farmer, lived and died in Oostwold (town), having a son, named Leu, and a daughter named Eltje.

Jan Boijkema most likely had more brothers or relatives, from where offspring could have come. This is uncertain and nothing can be said with certainty. This is just as ambiguous as the parents of Jan Boijkema of whom I found no record. With the crafting of this family tree I intended to inform the members of this old and elaborate family and give them proof of their heritage. Also I would like to point out the relations between the people. I have no ill gesture in doing this.

To know who our ancestors were, to whom we are, next to God, depended upon and thankful to, and to know when and where they lived cannot be irrelevant. More importantly we are obligated to give our respects and keep them in honorable memories, just as we once hope to be a memorable link in this genealogy. Just as Bildad the Suhiter said unto Job: Ask the previous generations, and prepare to do research of their fathers.
Hokke, Otte, Kuiken family updates in progress

Due to some personal changes in my daily schedule, there are some delays in the family tree updates. Len Hokke provided more family tree information that I am working on; Dorothy Tol provided a Kuiken family tree which shows that I am related to her in both the Buis and the Otte family lines, and I will be adding those as time permits. All of the families listed in the subject of this update are loosely related, and as the updates are finalized I will post again to show the relationships to each.

Hokke family update

Additions to the Hokke family are forthcoming, thanks to the information provided by Len Hokke. He provided me with the the names of my direct ancestors' siblings, and his notes included the surnames of my 8th great-grandparents Gilles Janse van Esch and Annetje Rutse Mol. I had only the patronyms and not the surnames; but the additional information will allow me to try to confirm the names of both of their fathers and perhaps even find the names of their mothers and other siblings.

A new member at Ancestry.com (I don't know this person's actual name yet) gave me more information on the names and dates concerning Gustav and Richard Lindstrom. Thanks to this, I was able to go one generation further and find Gustav's paternal grandfather, parents & siblings in the 1920 census and immigration record.

Brom family tree updates, ongoing

Judy Beach sent along a copy of a family tree of the Brom family. I am indebted to her, and have typed the information up! All lines are descendants of <a href=http://ginnysanchez.com/famtree/individual.php?pid=I644321211&ged=3255054.ged">Tijmen Brom, but almost all are family that I didn't even know existed--just as they didn't know about me! (Dutch families can get BIG!) All this, as a result of the discovery of my grandmother's living "baby brother" recently. It was the find a lifetime, for an amateur genealogist!

Now that this is all typed up I will be needing help of any family members with ancestry.com accounts (I do); I will be looking up available birth and death records to attach to the names in this Brom family tree.

Possibly the most exciting thing that can happen in family tree research has happened recently; I discovered a living sibling of my grandmother (in the Buis family)! So far, he has helped to identify some people in old photographs that I could not; he gave me a story about a photograph I had of my great-grandparents; and most exciting of all, I am now in contact with three second cousins, each of which have given me more information about my family! Even more exciting is that soon, I will be getting a Brom family tree that I will be able look over, and check against information that I've uncovered in this family. It will allow me to not only add to what I already have in the generations that I havem but possibly even research the tree farther back than I already have.

Additional information was found at Genlias, and was added to Fred's line.
